It’s a fiendishly ingenious camp, one which complies with the letter of galactic rules for how POWs must be held, but definitely not with the spirit. If you haven’t read all the books that come before these stories in Miles’ chronology, I don’t recommend this book. This story is actually better on a re-read.
They are being treated as a social experiment, being mastered by pushing and prodding, lnfinity hatred, distrust, and most of all, despair.
Since I have been reading the series, I was okay, but it might take a while for newbies to catch on. Borders of Infinity is very good on several levels: Refresh and try again. I’d read all these novellas in the omnibuses many times before I picked up this book. Though things progress, actions rarely feel they have more than immediate consequences, and I wish we just got more progression of the races and the world rather than just Miles as a character.

For a novella, this one packed a lot in. I admire Miles and his parents very much; they are ethical people in the best sense. I appreciate that the author handled this topic with restraint. Bujold does death fairly well — the grief, the loss, the guilt and sorrow. Bujold works them into the ensuing narrative again and again and again and it’s gorgeous. You also get a sense of how close to the bofders Miles is all the time and how deeply he feels for the people in his charge. I enjoy the series. I really ifninity all three of these short stories.
