Theory and Practice in This is a great book for anyone interested in the topic. Many of the aspects and strategies listed here have become so commonplace as to appear obvious, but this book counterinsurgehcy likely revolutionary in its own time. Yet whatever their differences, both have effective advice for the counterinsurgent, and both of the books should be used in conjunction when planning and preparing for counterinsurgency operations.

Prcatice Galula presents this eight-step process as a guide to hot counterinsurgency operations, he is quick to point out, “Like every similar concept, this one may be sound in theory but dangerous when applied rigidly to a specific case.

Indeed ,as Galula put it, “Essential though it hteory, the military action is secondary to the political one, its primary purpose being to afford the political power enough freedom to work safely with the population. Lieutenant Colonel Galula’s reputation, which I had believed before reading this book to have become somewhat over-inflated of late, was apparently well earned.

One of the authentic and detailed exposition on the nature and cause of insurgency. With his four principles in mind, Galula goes on to describe a general military and political strategy to put them into operation in an area that is under full insurgent control:. Galula lays out the basic steps of an insurgency or revolutionary war and the steps neccessary to combat or suppress one.


In this book, Galula provides the basic strategy and tactics necessary to successfully defeat insurgencies through the development of thery “political machine” capable of garnering public support. This book is still in force despite having been written in the 60s, since the principles observed by the author have not changed much over the years.

I’m actually quite surprised- because I have long since learned that anything trendy usually sucks, I was not expecting much from this book. Despite being a rather slim volume consisting of only pages, and reflecting upon a short time-span of counterinsurgency dating from the end of WWII to the early 60s, this is a concisely-written book that can either be scoured in a day or contemplated in a week.

In fact, well written and directed propaganda is more useful that well directed bullets. One topic I found interesting in this book was the clear definition and separation of conventional versus revolutionary conflicts and the statement that all revolutionary conflicts, and therefore insurgencies are political in nature.

Galula would’ve Jomini; but his work suffers from much of the same prescriptive weaknesses.

According to Galula, this coordination can be achieved through committees and integrated military-civilian hierarchies but, “more than anything else, a doctrine appears to be the practical answer to the problem of how to channel efforts in a single direction” p However, the reader should be advised that Galula is discussing a fairly narrow portion wsrfare the topic. He does not only theorize but offers practical solutions to most problems facing a counterinsurgent – that is, perhaps, the greatest merit of this book. I first read Colonel Galula’s book many years ago, in preparation for my assignment in Vietnam. A quick and easy read don’t be fooled by thsory long it took me; I went through part of it for a paper and then decided recently to read through it’s entirety for anyone interested in insurgency warfare.

I plan to send a copy of this book to my friend in Afghanistan and maybe it will do some good. He is judged on what he does, not on what thheory says. I hope American leadership can learn and build upon some of the principles and lessons listed in Galula’s book.
