I wanted to make a longer review, but due to lack of time, I will shorten it to this: It is hard to like very much a novel in which you don’t like the characters, especially the protagonist.
It is not that he Cipriano Salcedo was antipathetic, just that he could not gain my sympathy. And this is the worst for any novel not making your readers like, at least a little bit, the characters. So far I have noticed that all the books which take place in the middle ages or even later are the ones that I have disliked.
The year is and the Catholic church is going through a lot of unrest. On the day that Martin Luther nails the 95 theses on a church door So far I have noticed that all the books which take place in the middle ages or even later are the ones that I have disliked.

From the start his father abandons him and he is under the care of his wet-nurse Minervina. Cipriano is a fairly bright child and becomes a successful businessman, however the reformation which is well underway attracts him and he abandons Catholicism and joins the revolutionaries.
This leads to his arrest, trial and death. Historically the novel is accurate, As a theology student I had to study the Inquisition, Reformation and Counter-Reformation in detail and Delibes gets that down excellently but I just could not appreciate the story. I got bored many times and I had to force myself to read — something I hate doing. At a certain point I did not really care if Cipriano was just a victim of a certain type of mentality. I just wanted it all to end.
I wish I could love every book that passes through my hands but I have to come one I dislike now and then. I do not know how I got through this book. Not once did I ever find a like for the characters or the writing of this novel. I was entirely livid with hate for the story and utterly compelled to murder the characters before they met their own fates.
Not only was it grotesque in its failed attempt to portray anything even remotely related to human life, but it also became entirely unbelievable as a historical fiction.
Not once did I feel as if I was being transported to the time of Inquisition in I do not df how I got through this book. Not once did I feel as if I was being transported to the time of Inquisition in Spain. Not once did I feel any measure of compassion toward the main character, Cipriano.
His fate seemed entirely jarring and well, simply put, stupid.
The Heretic (El Hereje) : Miguel Delibes :
He as a character was not fascinating in the least bit, instead he was entirely depraved, horrid, and I was quite happy with his wretched fate. And though this is the story of a heretic, I never gained a sense that Cipriano ever had a migel inclination to religion at all. His transition to the Lutheran faith was barely apparent and lacked any sense of passion required from an individual arrested for heresy. Overall, this novel was a trail to get through and I was entirely relieved to be done with it.
I’ve been hovering between two and three stars for this book, shame you can’t do halves!!
On receiving this book, my first thoughts were ‘Oh no this is going to be heavy going. The history in this book is interesting, they way people lived, what they believed in, doctors methods of curing ills and deciding if a woman is able to conceive. I have to say I did find the topic migjel boring at times too though and the translation wa I’ve been hovering between two and three stars for this book, shame you can’t do halves!!
I have to say I did find the topic quite boring at times too though and edlibes translation was not the best with typos and some sentences that did just not make sense. The ending however, will stay with me for a while, the fact that prisoners were treated that is quite shocking, things have come along way since then.

The book can be summed up as, “There was delbes very interesting man who had a normal life until, late in the book, he fell in with people who had a slightly different religious viewpoint than the people in power, and the whole town turned out to watch him be burned at the stake.
